Electrical Engineer
Designs, specifies and supervises electrical systems - power distribution, protection, earthing, lighting and machines - and signs off that they are safe.
What the job involves
An electrical engineer designs electrical systems and takes responsibility for whether they are safe, adequate and economical. The work runs from load calculations, cable and protection sizing and single-line diagrams, through specifying equipment and supervising installation, to testing, commissioning and signing off what was built.
Where the work is
Consulting and design firms, contractors, the electricity utility and independent power producers, manufacturing and processing plants, hospitals and universities, mining and water utilities, public institutions with large estates, and international projects run by donors and NGOs.
How people get into it
The route is a bachelor's degree in electrical or electrical and electronics engineering, then supervised experience under a senior engineer, then professional registration. Design judgement is built on site as much as in an office, so the engineers who progress fastest are the ones who go and look at what they specified.
