Fibre Optic Technician
Installs, terminates, tests and repairs fibre-optic cable - splicing, connectors, OTDR and power-meter tests, and locating faults.
What the job involves
A fibre optic technician installs, terminates, tests and repairs the fibre that carries almost all long-distance and backbone traffic. The work covers pulling and securing cable, splicing fibres, fitting connectors, proving each link with a power meter and an OTDR, and finding the break when a link goes down.
Where the work is
Telecom operators and internet service providers, contractors building networks for them, data centres and large campuses, power utilities that run fibre along their lines, broadcasters, and organisations with their own campus backbones such as universities and hospitals.
How people get into it
Most technicians come from a TVET or polytechnic background in telecommunications, electronics or networking, then learn fibre through employer training and supervised work. The Fiber Optic Association and BICSI certificates are the usual way to prove the skill to a new employer.
