Software Developer
Designs, writes, tests and maintains software - turning requirements into working, readable code and fixing what breaks.
What the job involves
A software developer turns requirements into working software. The job covers designing features, writing and reviewing code, testing it, fixing defects and maintaining applications after release, usually as part of a team that includes other developers, testers and the people who will use the system.
Where the work is
Technology companies and startups, banks, fintech and telecom companies, government agencies building digital services, NGOs and research projects, software consultancies that build systems for clients, and remote or freelance work for organisations outside Rwanda.
How people get into it
Most developers study computer science, software engineering or information technology, though many build strong skills through bootcamps and self-study. What gets people hired is evidence of working code: projects, contributions and a portfolio that shows how they solve problems.
