IT Support Technician

The first person staff call when a computer, printer, account or connection fails: diagnosing, fixing, installing and explaining.

What the job involves

An IT support technician is the person colleagues turn to when technology gets in the way of their work. The job covers setting up computers, phones and printers, fixing hardware and software faults, resetting accounts, connecting people to the network, and explaining each fix so the problem is less likely to return.

Where the work is

Ministries, districts and public agencies, schools and universities, hospitals and health centres, banks, telecom and technology companies, retailers, NGOs, and IT service firms that support many client organisations at once.

How people get into it

A TVET certificate, diploma or degree in IT or computer engineering is the usual starting point. Many technicians begin as interns or on a helpdesk, and CompTIA A+ is the certificate most closely matched to the work.
