ICT Officer

Covers every ICT need of a public institution or district office - users, network, equipment, systems and procurement support - often as the only ICT person on site.

What the job involves

An ICT officer makes technology work for a public institution or office. The job ranges from supporting staff with computers and accounts, to keeping the local network and internet connection running, to looking after the institution's systems and data and advising on what ICT equipment to buy.

Where the work is

District and sector offices, ministries and government agencies, hospitals and health centres, schools and TVET institutions, courts and public corporations, and the ICT units of NGOs and projects working alongside government.

How people get into it

Most ICT officer posts ask for a bachelor's degree or advanced diploma in information technology, computer science, computer engineering or information systems, often with some years of experience. Support or technician roles are the usual stepping stone, and broad certificates such as CompTIA A+ and Network+ fit the breadth of the work.
